Undergraduate and Graduate

Korea Government Scholarship Program

The Ministry of Education offers a scholarship program for international students from countries that have concluded a bilateral cultural agreement with Korea. Foreign scholarship students are actively making contributions for increasing ties and amity in throughout the world in numerous fields such as education, diplomacy and enterprise.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must be a citizen of a country to which the scholarship is offered.
  • Detailed name of country will be announced on NIIED website.

Academic program

Undergraduate Course
1 year of Korean language + 4 year of Undergraduate
Master's Course
1 year of Korean language + 2 year of Master's
Ph.D. Course
1 year of Korean language + 3 year of Ph.D.

Regulation

  • Exemption of Language course: Above 5 Level of TOPIK
  • For entering the regular course a student must take a TOPIK certificate above 3 level within one year.

Field of study

Undergraduate Course
4-year undergraduate courses provided by the universities designated by NIIED
  • Not applicable: fields the study period of which exceeds 4 years (e.g. medicine, dentistry, architecture)
Graduate Course
All the fields
  • Tuition will be covered up to five million won per semester for each scholar. If the semester tuition of a specific program at a particular university exceeds five million won, attendance in the program is possible upon the condition that the university covers the overage amount beyond the initial five million won.
  • Night schools, seasonal programs, broadcasting schools, and cyber-schools (including online distant learning programs) are not eligible for application.

Undergraduate

GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) Program for International Students

Funded by National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, GKS(Global Korea Scholarship) Program For International Students.

Eligibility

  • Full-time students of SNU ( Sophomore / Junior / Senior )
  • Good academic performance
  • Proficiency in verbal and written English and/or Korean

Provision

  • Monthly Stipend (500,000KRW).
  • Health Insurance Fee (150,000KRW)
  • 200,000KRW to assist with settlement expenses
  • The scholarship period is two semesters (12 months)

Procedures

Applicants need to submit 1~6 files to the CSE office. (Date of GKSP will be notified every January)

Glo-Harmony Scholarship

SNU selects one recipient per semester among newly admitted undergraduate students who are citizens of OCED/DAC recipient countries.

Eligibility

  • Applicant should apply for SNU international admissions as all other international applicants.
  • Language proficiency of either English or Korean needed.

Provision

  • Full tuition fees for maximum 8 semesters
  • Partial living expenses
  • Air fare.

Procedure

  • Glo-Harmony Scholarship will be notified every Feburary and July on the OIA website.

Tuition Grants for Overseas Students

Undergraduate students with a GPA of 2.7 or above for the preceding semester are eligible for this scholarship program. Applications for this scholarship are accepted at the Office of International Affairs (OIA) of SNU.

Provision

  • Exempt from tuition fees for the following semester.

Scholarship information

  • If a recipient stays out of university without registering as a scholarship student after the selection, the recipient will have his or her scholarship privileges revoked.
  • While enrolled, can be awarded this scholarship up to maximum of 8 semesters.
  • National fund or at the government’s invitation Recipients may obtain a full tuition waiver

Superior Academic Performance Scholarship

Students who have completed at least four semesters of study and who have earned an overall GPA of 3.6 or above may apply for this scholarship

Scholarship information

  • Only one undergraduate is selected from each department.
  • Applicant with the highest academic record may be selected if there is no eligible international student.
  • Can be awarded to students who are not receiving any other concurrent scholarships.
  • Applications are accepted every semester.
  • Exact dates of the application period will be notified on the CSE website or to every eligible International students.

Work-Study Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students in need of extra financial support. Recipients are selected each semester through application procedures overseen by each department. Recipients are required to work 40 to 60 hours every month as an assistant at various institutions on campus such as an administration office or library, which guarantees 6,000 won per hour, and totaling approximately 300,000 won per month. The money is paid directly to the recipient’s personal bank account. Unlike other scholarships, students receiving other scholarships may apply for this program. Applications are accepted at the institution of interest; administration office of the department of interest, library, Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), SNU Korean Language Education Center (KLEC) and so forth.

Graduate

Graduate Scholarship for Excellent Foreign Students (GSFS)

GSFS is offered to graduates from universities in East, Southeast, and Central Asia to help them continue their studies at SNU. 1 to 4 students from various colleges of SNU, for a total number of every semester, are selected.

Provision

  • Exempted from paying tuition for 2 to 4 academic years, and accommodation (in the Gwanak campus dormitory)
  • Award decisions are based on the applicants’ academic achievements and potential, as well as their personal accomplishments. Records of past studies, a study plan, personal statement, and letters of recommendation and other achievement records, as well as specific qualifications such as language proficiency, are all taken into consideration.
  • The Office of International Affairs (OIA) will assist the application and registration procedure.

Korean Government Scholarship

  • Applicant must be a citizen of a country to which the scholarship is offered.
  • Graduate or research applicants
    Must have, or must be expecting to receive a Bachelor's Degree prior to August 31 in the year of application.
  • Doctorate applicants
    Must have, or must be expecting to receive a Master's Degree prior to August 31 in the year of application.
  • Academic grades from the last educational institute attended
    within the top 20%
  • Good command of Korean or English.

Procedures

  1. Korean diplomatic or consular missions abroad make a preliminary selection of applicants based upon the recommendations of the government of the country to which the scholarship is allocated.
  2. Once the preliminary selection is made, the Korean mission abroad recommends the selected candidates to the National Institute for International Education Development (NIIED) via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
  3. The scholarship review committee of the NIIED selects the finalists and notifies the Korean embassy via the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the selection of the candidates, and then, as the final step in the official procedure, the Korean embassy sends an award letter (confirmation of acceptance) to each recipient.

Global IT Talent Scholarship program

This scholarship is offered to international students who enroll the master program and work for a Korean company after the graduation. This program is co-sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Knowledge and Economy. Korean companies participating in this program will provide opportunities for internship during the study as well as hiring after the graduation.

Requirements

  • Scholarship recipients to work as an intern at one of the participating companies for 6 months during the study.

Procedures

Admission of this scholarship program will be offered for the Fall semester in 2011. The admission will be decided based on the applicants' academic achievements and potential, as well as their personal accomplishments.

Scholarship for international exchange students

GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) Program for Foreign Exchange Students

Funded by National Institute for International Education (NIIED) under the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, GKS(Global Korea Scholarship) Program For Foreign Exchange Students provides financial aids for incoming exchange students from developing nations. GKS program for Foreign Exchange Student is for one semester (6 months), usually for the Fall semesters only.

Eligibility

  • Full-time students of SNU Student Exchange Partner Universities
  • Mentally prepared to live in another culture, in local conditions
  • Completed 1 year of studies at home university
  • Good academic performance
  • Proficiency in verbal and written English and/or Korean

Provision

  • A round-trip airfare
  • Monthly Stipend (800,000 KRW)
  • Health Insurance Fee (150,000 KRW)
  • 200,000 KRW to assist with settlement expenses
  • The scholarship period is one semester (6 months)

Procedures

Only Among nominated applicants, SNU will select successful candidates. Therefore, Interested and eligible students must contact the exchange program coordinator at their home universities.

Scholarship for international students

Industry Affiliated Global Scholarship Program

Industry affiliates provide internships, scholarships, and projects.
SNUCSE industry affiliates include several Korean companies.

General Requirements

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in engineering, computer science
  • GPA ranking is top 20%
  • Excellent knowledge of English
