Despite the wide popularity of tutorial videos on the web, learners face difficulty in searching and browsing through a video repository. ToolScape mines work-in-progress images and step-by-step information inside videos to support learning new skills in Photoshop. A user study shows that learners using ToolScape produce higher quality designs in Photoshop and gain higher self-efficacy. One challenge in designing ToolScape is collecting annotations accurately and efficiently. I will present a crowdsourcing workflow for getting annotations, and discuss learner-sourcing, a method to turn learners' activities into usable annotations.
Juho Kim is a third-year Ph.D. student in the User Interface Design Group in MIT CSAIL (Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory), working with Prof. Rob Miller. He earned his M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2010, with a specialization in Human-Computer Interaction, and B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from Seoul National University in 2008. He designs user interfaces and social systems to support learning creative skills with video.
