The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has an immediate need for a senior level engineering
professional with experience in numerical control systems. This position works within our Korea
Energy Technology Center R&D efforts in this discipline. This position is located in Busan Korea.
Position Description
The applicant will have real time control system experience with the 4 standard languages defined
within IEC 61131, Function Block, Text, Ladder, and Sequence. Desirable to have an experience in
additional programming languages of HTML, C++, Visual Basic and working knowledge of interface
protocols. Experience programming PLC’s or other real time control systems is preferred.
Understanding of complex ship and drilling systems is desirable. Excellent Korean and English
reading and speaking is required.
This position leads offshore drilling systems research and development efforts. The lead in this group
will be expected to maintain industry relationships through participation in technical meetings,
technical seminars and professional organizations.
Position Requirements
Master’s or higher degree in Computer Science or Marine Systems Engineering or related discipline
from an accredited university or college is required. Undergraduate degree in other educational
disciplines will be considered based on experience. A knowledge of numerical control system is
strongly desired.
Candidates must be “forward thinking” and demonstrate a knowledge of industry trends. A creative
approach and willingness to mentor internal and external clients is required. The individual must
communicate effectively in English, in both oral and written formats. This position works extensively
with internal and external clients, governmental organizations, and academic entities in support of
ABS Rules and Guide development. Individuals may be required to travel domestically and
internationally to participate and/or present technical papers, training, or assistance to same. Must
possess the ability to lead a team, work well in a collaborative manner, meet schedule deadlines, and
coordinate multiple efforts projects in an environment where priorities and assignments may change
regularly.
